Exploring the world of product design.

introduction

This past summer (2023), I began my product design internship at Sonatype. Which focuses on on software supply chain management and open-source software security. I have spent the last 8 months refining design systems, optimizing developer tools, engaging in user research, and learning about all the different aspects of product design.

Figma, Sketch, Miro, Jira, Dovetail

I worked alongside

Three amazing major design and product teams.

Design Systems Team

I became part of the team during a pivotal phase in the design system's evolution, transitioning from Sketch to Figma. My role involved not only redesigning components to utilize Figma's full potential but also enhancing existing ones. I worked on 50+ components created a new organizational system for the design team.

Developer Tools Team

I had the opportunity to work with developers and contribute UX and UI enhancements to various developer integration tools within the Sonatype Developer team.

User Research Team

I participated in interviews, created usability tests, and conducted surveys. Then translated the accumulated research into valuable insights to inform our future designs.

accomplishments & Lessons

I have grown so much as a designer.

My Accomplishments.

Upon completing my 13-week Summer internship, I had successfully established a new organizational structure of the design system, significantly improving its efficiency. I leveraged survey data, interviews, and usability testing to generate actionable insights. Additionally I implemented numerous user experience enhancements for the the Sonatype Developer Dashboard.

What I learned.

After the summer, I was given the opportunity to continue my internship part-time during the school year, and for the last 5 months I have continued to work on the developer tools team, I where I am continuing to learn and grow as much as I can as a product designer. Here are the major lessons I have learned:

Always take time to plan.

Success in design isn't about rushing ideas but taking the time to grasp the problem deeply. This shift in perspective showed me that effective designs come from a clear understanding of the problem. In product design, a well-thought-out plan isn't just a step; it's the foundation for purposeful solutions.

Really understand the problem space.

Learning about the software development lifecycle was necessary for me to navigate this space effectively. It involved learning how developers operate and improving communication with them. This experience taught me to bridge the gap between the technical intricacies of software development and design.

Unfortunately, I am unable to share this work publicly.
